Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her." (Luke 10:38-42)
What's in a Name?
St. Peter's women's group is aptly named the Mary and Martha Group because its purpose and activities reflect the personalities of both of these women of The Bible.
Many readers regard Martha as a homemaker, concerned with household details. She is viewed as being quite hospitable, a highly esteemed practice in Jesus' day. Mary, on the other hand, is seen as a more scholarly or spiritual woman.
Join Our Mary's and Martha's
All women of St. Peter's are welcome to join the Mary and Martha group as they work to make our church a more hospitable place for members, guests, and visitors; to serve those outside of our church who are in need of help; and to grow in their knowledge of and faith in the Lord.
